POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER
Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD) first called “shell shock” by doctors treating soldiers in World War I who continued experiencing the fear and trauma of battle afterwards. Ketamine was first used in field treatment of injured soldiers during the Vietnam War. In the war in Afghanistan it was noted that soldiers who had been treated with Ketamine for their injuries experienced lower rates of PTSD after their recovery than ones who were not. PTSD is not limited to veterans, police officers and firemen.
PTSD can also result from a traumatic event such as surviving a natural disaster or car accident. Increasingly, Complex PTSD is widely recognized in persons experiencing repeated trauma over months and years, rather than a single event. Examples ongoing childhood sexual abuse by a relative, ongoing physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, being a prisoner of war, living in an area of war for long periods of time, and ongoing childhood neglect.
