Is IV Vitamin C Effective Against COVID-19?

AyaFusion- F Image Size (1)Most people have understood the reasoning and precautions around the recent quarantine for Coronavirus (COVID-19), but most people are still in the dark as to what they should do if they do happen to contract it.

Well, finally medical science has offered us an effective solution to treat the symptoms and perhaps kill the virus. Discover exactly what you need to do to help with preventing and treating the Coronavirus in this blog.

Research Regarding IV Vitamin C

Recently, some research provided by the government of Shanghai, China has announced its official recommendation that COVID-19 could effectively be treated with high amounts of intravenous vitamin C.

How Much Vitamin C Should You Take?

Per their research, the dosage recommendations vary with the severity of the illness, and acan range from 50 to 200 milligrams per kilogram of body weight per day—max 200 mg/kg/day.

Earlier this year, the Japanese College of Intravenous Therapy (JCIT) also recommended intravenous vitamin C (IVC) 12.5/25g (12,500 - 25,000 mg) for acute viral infections (influenza, herpes zoster, common cold, rubella, mumps, etc.) and virus mimetic infections (such as idiopathic sudden hearing loss, Bell's palsy).

Put simply, when adults presented with mild symptoms, IV Vitamin C 12.5g was given during early stages of the illness and IV Vitamin C 25g for moderate to severe symptoms.

The usual recommended dose of IV Vitamin C is usually administered once or twice a day for 2-5 continuous days, which can be given along with other natural viral treatments as well per the specific symptoms of the patient.

How Does Vitamin C Work Against Viral Infections?

When a patient presents or is diagnosed with acute viral infections, such as with COVID-19,  they usually also exhibit a depletion of vitamin C which triggers increasing free radical damage and cellular dysfunction.

Neutralizes free radicals

These patients should be treated with vitamin C, oral or IV, for neutralizing free radicals throughout the body and inside cells, maintaining physiological functions, and enhancing natural healing.

Easy on the GI

As opposed to oral Vitamin C, IV administration provides systemic absorption throughout the body and mitigates the GI upset symptoms that come with high dose oral loads of Vitamin C.

WHAT IS THE CDC SAYING ABOUT Protecting Yourself From Contracting THE CORONAVIRUS?

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus (COVID-19).

The best way to prevent contraction of the virus is to avoid exposure.

However, as a reminder, CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory disease.

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

  • Stay home when you are sick.

  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.

  • Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.

    • CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.

    • Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to  others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

    • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
